to moderate pain

Abdominal cramping is a type of pain that characteristically “comes and goes”, in other words, the pain comes, then eases until disappearing almost entirely; the cramps may also become stronger. They usually occur when the muscular walls of the hollow organs (intestines, urinary system, gallbladder, uterus) are inflamed or irritated,  causing them to contact and then relax. It is the contraction that causes the pain, which then eases when they relax. Cramping may also be associated with organs such as the kidneys.

Abdominal cramps can have different origins or triggers and can be brought on by physiological processes, as in the case of menstrual cramps; they can be mild as in the case of digestion problems with a buildup of gases in the intestines, or they can be caused by a more serious problem. In the case of abdominal cramps, it is very important to see if they are accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea or other symptoms which would make it advisable to consult with a doctor. Most abdominal cramping can be relieved effectively with painkillers and/or antispasmodic products. The most commonly used painkillers include anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen, while hyoscine is a major antispasmodic remedy. Both ibuprofen and hyoscine have proven to be highly effective and safe for the treatment of abdominal cramping; combining the two is part of a strategy that makes the medication more effective, using smaller doses of each than would be necessary if used separately.

Pain is an unpleasant feeling of discomfort that may be a sign of the presence or  threat of a health problem. Pain may be mild, barely noticeable, or so severe that it hinders the daily of activities of those feeling it.

Any part of the human body may be the source of pain; in women, however, there are areas where pain is more frequent due, precisely, to their condition as women, such as menstrual cramps, or due to their habits, such as wearing  tight clothing or high heels, among others.

• Headache: Stress (stress headache) and migraine are the most frequent causes of headaches. Tension headaches are felt on both sides of the head and sometimes spread to neck and back muscles. They tend to be mild to moderate and may be due to sleep disorders, bad position when sleeping, or worry of some kind. Migraines tend to affect one side of the head alone and are accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light (photophobia) and other symptoms.
• Menstrual cramps: These are due to a combination of spasms and inflammation of the muscles of the uterus; they may precede actual menstruation and vary in intensity. They are sometimes accompanied by other symptoms, such as vomiting and, in the case of some women, may affect their daily life.
• Pain in legs, back and hips: This is generally muscle pain due to leg cramping or overweight;  dehydration, physical activity using inappropriate shoes (high heels) or leaving legs in the same position that leads to muscle fatigue. Remaining in an awkward position for long periods of time can lead to muscle contractions.
• Breast pain: Pain, accompanied by a feeling of tightness or fullness  of the breasts may cause discomfort when sleeping on the stomach or wearing a bra; it tends to occur shortly before menstruation due to hormone changes during this period.

When we think of managing or dealing with pain, we must first consider that there are different kinds of pain and that the general recommendations for one specific type of pain are not necessarily helpful with other types. Nevertheless, in general  the most frequent types of acute pain respond well to the medications called painkillers. There are a wide variety of painkilling medications, but some also share another similar characteristic which involves reducing inflammation. These are called anti-inflammatory drugs. Anti-inflammatory drugs are effective and, in view of the long time that they have been on the market, despite variations among the different products, have proven to be quite safe. Sometimes anti-inflammatory drugs are combined with other products that enhance this effectiveness by different kinds of action. The reason for combining the different drugs it to take advantage of the potential of each one, using lower doses of each. Some examples are to be found in the combination of ibuprofen and caffeine or ibuprofen and antispasmodics.
